What is BS7858 vetting?
BS7858:2019 is the British Standard for security screening of individuals employed in security environments. It requires verification of identity, 5-year employment history, address history, criminal record checks, financial probity, and global sanctions screening. It's mandatory for SIA licence holders and anyone working in security-sensitive roles.
How long does vetting actually take?
Standard cases complete within 14 days of form submission. Priority cases complete within 5 days. The clock starts when the candidate submits a complete application with all required documents. Most delays come from slow employer references — our priority service includes aggressive reference chasing to minimise this.
Who pays for the vetting?
Typically the employer or security contractor pays. Candidates can complete the application form for free — payment is only required when an employer wants to process the case. Employers can link candidates using a referral code, or adopt candidates who have already completed forms using their unique candidate code.
What documents do candidates need?
At minimum: valid passport or driving licence, proof of address (utility bill or bank statement), National Insurance number, and details of all employers and addresses for the past 5 years. Our form guides candidates through exactly what's needed and allows them to save progress if they need to find documents.
Can third parties verify certificates?
Yes. Every certificate includes a unique verification code. Auditors, clients, or regulators can enter this code on our website to confirm the vetting is genuine, valid, and what checks were completed. We can also provide email confirmation to authorised parties.
How is candidate data protected?
All data is encrypted at rest and in transit using AWS infrastructure. We're the data controller and processor — employers see case status only, not the underlying personal data. Documents are stored in encrypted S3 buckets and automatically deleted after the retention period. Full GDPR compliance.
